An Inconvenient Marriage (working title)

When Anthony Brudenell, Earl of Ulverdale, returns from the war in Spain he is scarred, mentally and physically, by his experiences there.  Moreover, his hopes of finding domestic contentment seem remote.  He has not set eyes on his child bride since the day of their wedding eight years earlier, an arrangement he was forced into to save the family from financial ruin.  Having now inherited the earldom, Anthony must assume the responsibilities that go with it. Although there seems to be little hope of marital reconciliation, the alternative is an annulment and a scandal that will plunge the family into disgrace.  Before anything can happen he must face the wife he left all those years ago.

However, the frightened child bride is long gone.  In her place is a lovely and spirited woman who now enjoys her own independence. In the absence of a loving relationship Claudia has sought fulfilment elsewhere, an aspect of her life that she keeps hidden from the fashionable London society in which she moves.  Anthony’s arrival threatens to overturn all her plans.  Moreover, he arouses feelings that she doesn’t want to examine too closely.

Then Napoleon escapes from Elba and all Wellington’s officers are recalled to duty.   The shadow of Waterloo looms across Europe. Anthony and Claudia must come to terms with the past and acknowledge what is in their hearts while there is still time.
